Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Are You Aware Of The Very Real Risks If You Don't Exercise?

2010-01-31

Our ancestors were very active just to survive and up until the middle of the 20th century most people lived a fairly active life. People had to engage in regular, moderate and occasionally vigorous, physical activity through the necessities of living. Working lives required a lot of physical activity, from farming to simply doing housework without appliances.

In the second half of the 20th century, this began to change and these inbuilt general levels of physical activity declined. Machines do the work that used to be done by hand and cars have replaced walking and cycling. Nowadays physical work of any description is no longer part of ordinary life for most people. Recreational time is also mostly inactive with that time being spent sitting in front of a screen of some kind.

In general, lifestyles have become sedentary and the consequences of this are that we get sick. Nowadays killer diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes and dozens of other are prevalent. Much of these 'lifestyle diseases' are caused by the lack of 'growth and repair' hormones that are no longer at healthy levels.

These hormones are only stimulated by vigorous activity and keep the human body strong and resilient to these premature and preventable diseases. Our bodies were designed to be very physically active and when this is removed they weaken.

The situation has become so bad more than fifty percent of the population has at least one chronic lifestyle disease and many have multiple conditions. Even more terrifying is the fact that children are now developing these diseases and like their parents are getting sick and dying early. And the cause. Too little exercise and too much food.

In the next decade 400 million people are predicted to die from these dreadful diseases that bring nothing but suffering for the victims and their families.

We all know how to stop all of this. Every day we hear from numerous sources that we need to give our bodies the activity they need to stay healthy. Why then are six out of ten adults ignoring this and doing no exercise at all?

So, the next time you find yourself making yet another excuse not to exercise, think of the harm you are doing to your body by not doing so and the risk you are taking. You may not see any consequences of your inactivity right away - but you will. Big time.

How much time does it really take to do what you need to keep yourself strong and therefore healthy? Just 2-3 sessions each week of a proper program that contains mostly strength training exercise is what you need to give your muscular system the 'work' it needs. Get it set up by a fitness professional so you can be sure you are going to get the right results and are not just wasting your time on ineffective exercise methods.

Never forget that a sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of premature disease along with speeding the aging process itself. We are not talking about proper exercise being an 'optional extra' here or some 'frivolous luxury' if you have spare time.

We are talking about a non negotiable, preventable form of self care that every single adult on the planet must do if they value the life that they have been given. We have to work our muscles regularly to stay healthy.

You are lucky as previous generations believed that it was normal to get weak and feeble as one got older. We now know that this is not true - inactivity is the culprit not aging itself. So, take advantage of this knowledge and grab an increased quality of your life for yourself as you get older.
