Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: An Expanding Waistline Is A Ticking Health Bomb

2011-01-28

There is a condition that is on the rise among adults that is characterized by a gain of fat around the waistline as its major symptom. It has been estimated somewhere around 40 percent of adults have this condition which can increase risk of major disease. Its name is 'metabolic syndrome' although sometimes called 'syndrome X'.

Some of the other symptoms are lack of energy, sluggishness and little desire to be active. Body weight continues to climb upwards and it is extremely difficult to lose it. Blood pressure, sugars and fats may also be creeping upwards. It may even feel like your health is spinning out of control and you are aging at an accelerated rate.

We used to believe that these things were accepted signs of getting older but they are also signs of a disordered metabolism that is not running at its best. This can take time to worsen - often years (even decades) but it is an insidious process that often remains undetected until signs of ill health show themselves.

If we continue down this path of health decline by the time disease symptoms show themselves it is usually too late to do much about it. The remainder of life might have to be endured with a chronic lifestyle disease which around 50 percent of the population already has. Killers like heart disease, cancer and diabetes and dozens of their mates can rob people of their lives both in quantity and quality.

The passing years, a no-proper exercise lifestyle and eating poor quality processed foods all contribute to this 'eat-too-much' and 'exercise-too-little' health issue. Diets loaded with unhealthy man-made sugars and fats, low in fiber but way too high in calories send blood sugar levels on a constant roller coaster ride.

Eventually the body becomes overwhelmed and simply unable to keep up the task of trying to process sugar from the blood. The end result is the fat weight increase that is at the very center of metabolic syndrome along with unbalanced hormone levels that cause food cravings and out of control hunger that keeps the cycle going.

The solution is to clean up the diet with natural unprocessed foods and most importantly, adopt a real commitment to proper exercise that works the muscles directly to help mop up the excess sugars and fats from the blood.

When you exercise your muscles properly as they were designed to work with proper strength training exercise the metabolic rate will increase which is the rate the body burns fuel (calories).

Hormone levels come back into balance, health is restored and weight can be lost easier.

Years ago we may have not needed to worry about strength training exercise as our daily lives had enough built in activity to keep us healthy. But things have changed and our lives now-a-days are mainly sedentary. We are paying for this easiness and convenience with our health.

But we do not need to go down this road, all it takes is a 2-3 sessions each week of your strength training program and ditching as much processed food as possible and you can make sure you will not be that one out every two of us heading down the path totally preventable and unnecessary disease.
