Vertical blinds also have some other advantages that make them an
attractive proposition over other window treatments. For front facing windows and even front doors, vertical blinds are preferable to horizontal blinds because they allow for tighter control over the field of view. This allows for better privacy even as it gives you a better view of the outside. They are also easier to maintain; unlike horizontal blinds, they do not have to work against gravity, with the result that of the two blinds of similar strength and design, the vertical blinds will last longer.

Parts of a Vertical Blind

Vertical blinds are blinds whose slats or vanes hang vertically, except their slats are technically called Louvers. Another term for louvers is hangers. The louvers hang by a rod installed at the top, which is called the Headrail. The louvers are not attached directly to the rod; rather they are attached to movable Carriages, which hang by the rod. This construction allows the louvers to be moved horizontally.

Since the louvers are made out of fabric or other relatively light material, there is a weight attached to the bottom to give them stability. This weight is called the Bottom Weight. In the United Kingdom and some other countries, the chain that joins the louvers or the bottom weights at that end is called the bobble chain.

Types of Vertical Blinds

The following are some of the common materials used for the vanes of vertical blinds:

* Fabric Fabric blinds are quieter to operate, and are very effective against the Ultra Violet rays
from the sun. They are also available in a wide variety of patterns and colors.
* PVC or Synthetic The biggest attraction about PVC vanes is that they are relatively cheaper
than other types of materials. They are available in both smooth and textured form, where the
textured PVC blinds even look like fabric blinds.
* Cane Cane blinds have their own type of special look which can be called Mediterranean or
tropical. They are also not the best blockers of sunlight, so they are an option only when you do
not want to block too much of sunrays.
* Paper Along with PVC, these too are one of the cheapest types of materials for vertical blinds.
They are light, but relatively durable.

Buying Vertical Blinds

The most important point to consider when buying a vertical blind is the quality of its headrail. Indeed, the life of a blind depends directly on how long its headrail will work properly. If you want a burgundy colored blind, you can get that color from many different manufacturers, however not all manufacturers make long-lasting headrail mechanisms. So always check out the headrail and the carriage of a vertical blind before you get them installed.

Vertical blinds allow you to keep a finer control over your field of vision, as well as control the amount of much sunlight that enters your room. They are ideal for French windows, as well as for doors and front facing windows. Vertical blinds are available in many different materials, colors, styles and privacy levels, which makes sure that you will always get the type of vertical blind that you want for your home
of office.
